Life in Culpeper

Between the year 2000 and today, the county’s population jumped from approximately 34,000 people to just over 50,000. But take a quick drive through town and you’ll realize that Culpeper clearly serves a market much larger than 50,000 people. That’s because Culpeper serves as a hub of commerce, industry, healthcare and culture for its residents and several surrounding counties in central Virginia.

Throughout the year, Culpeper hosts a popular schedule of Festivals and Special Events, including February’s Mardi Gras Celebration, April’s Gnarly Hops and Barley Fest, May’s Wicked Bottom 5K, The Summer Third Thursday Concert Series, June’s CulpeperFest, an old-fashioned Fourth of July Festival with a Car and Bike Show, September’s Hoptober Fest, a Fall Farm Tour, October’s Air Fest and a Holiday Open House.

Residents and visitors to Culpeper know this is a community that loves living life outside. There are several great local parks and sporting facilities, but a couple deserve special recognition:

Commonwealth Park is one of Virginia’s largest equestrian facilities. It hosts a variety of national horse shows and special events including the HITS Culpeper Show Series.

While not in the borders of Culpeper proper, we couldn’t not mention the nearby Shenandoah National Park. The park extends along the Blue Ridge Mountains, and its famous Skyline Drive is just 30 minutes from town. Mostly forested, the park includes a vast network of trails— including a section of the Appalachian Trail— and features wetlands, waterfalls and rocky peaks like Hawksbill and Old Rag mountains.
